Skoda Launches Sportier-Looking Rapid StylePLUS Special Edition

Skoda fans may not get to see the Rapid Sport Concept produced, but at least they can now console themselves with a new version of the Rapid. The Rapid StylePLUS is a special edition model that adopts a sportier look thanks to standard black design elements on the body and rear spoiler, two-tone 17-inch alloy wheels and a new decorative trim on the inside.
Based on the “Ambition” trim level, the new special edition adds a series of design, comfort and functional elements. Styling enhancements include a black gloss boot-lid spoiler, black gloss covers on the exterior rear-view mirrors and the bars on the front bumper and side doors. The new Rapid also comes with dedicated two-tone 17-inch “Ray” alloy wheels (black and silver) and is offered with five body colors: Candy White, Sprint Yellow, Corrida Red, Rally Green and Denim Blue.
Although not yet shown by Skoda, the Satin Black interior includes sporty seat fittings with distinctively-shaped seats, stainless steel pedal covers and non-slip rubber surfaces. The dashboard comes with Piano Black inserts, while the steering wheel, gear stick and handbrake lever are covered in leather.
Equipment-wise, the Rapid StylePLUS is available with new xenon headlights and front fog lights with cornering light function. The sportier look isn’t backed by more powerful engines, as the special edition is offered with the same engines as the standard model. There are six units to choose from, including a 1.2 MPI with 74 hp, two 1.2 TSIs with 84 hp or 103 hp, a 1.4 TSI with 121 hp and two diesels – the 1.6 TDI with 88 hp and the 1.6 TDI with 103 hp.

Facelifted 2014 Skoda Yeti Comes in City and Outdoor Flavors

Skoda’s highly acclaimed Yeti crossover has just been given a modest overhaul, though by the looks of it, it’s sufficient in order for it to be appealing in its respective market sector, which, as we all know, is hugely competitive.
Skoda has added a dash of modernity to the Yeti’s image with a restyled front, slightly improved interior and new tail lights at the back, while for the first time, the compact model will be offered in two flavors, a more conventional looking 'City' edition, and a more rugged 'Outdoor' version with black protective moldings on the bumpers and side skirts.
This is by no means an extensive revamp, but since there was nothing really wrong with it, that’s not a bad thing. The most noticeable new addition are the completely redesigned headlights, which do away with the awkward shape of the current mode’s clusters, replacing them with clean, modern ones, in line with the rest of the range. At the rear, there are new lights, which retain the same shape as the non-facelifted model, yet offer more modern graphics and design and a reworked tailgate.
Inside, aside from the new model steering wheel, the Yeti becomes the first Skoda to be fitted with a rear-view camera, while it also gains a new double-sided floor covering in the boot.
The engine lineup comprises four diesel and three petrols, ranging in output from the 104hp (105PS) 1.2-liter TSI to the 168hp (170PS) 2.0-liter TDI. All-wheel drive and a six or seven-speed dual clutch transmission (DSG) are offered as an option on select models. For the first time, the front-wheel drive Yeti 1.6-liter (104hp/105PS) TDI 77 kW is now offered with an automatic seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.
Skoda will host the world premiere of the Yeti at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show.

Skoda Reveals Rapid SpaceBack Ahead of Frankfurt, Reminds Us of Audi A3 SportBack

Taking Skoda one step closer to design bossJozef Kaban’s vision is the Rapid Spaceback, a car we were expecting to see very soon, and already had a pretty good idea of what it will look like. We've had spyshots and teasers at our disposal, but today the Czech automaker released the first pictures of their estate/wagon Rapid variant, ahead of its debut at the Frankfurt motor show, in September.
However, none of the words used to described a car with an enlarged boot (wagon/estate) are present in the official press release. In fact, they call it the “first Skoda hatchback in the high-volume compact segment,” which looks “dynamic and fresh for young customer groups.”
It’s funny how they are now selling two different body styles of Rapid, and both of them are hatchbacks. Skoda doesn’t seem to be capable of sticking to the usual norms, and even their Superb flagship, which for all intents and purposes looks like a sedan is, in fact, also a liftback, with a clever split-folding rear hatch.
Still, this new shape is a welcome addition to the lineup, as this type of car is what the manufacturer was building when VW took over; the Favorit which turned into the Felicia both had a similar body style/shape – perhaps it would not have been a bad marketing plan to revive the pre-VW name for this very similar modern interpretation of the boxy old 1990s favorite. It’s better than Rapid “Spaceback,” is it not?
Now, let’s talk about the actual car. Skoda says that “individualization is a focus area in this car,” and they now offer a full-length tinted panoramic glass roof, which extends from the end of the windscreen to the top of the rear window with no interruptions. To compliment this, they have also specially designed an optionally-available glass rear hatch, which extends around 10 cm (4 in) further down. It is tinted to the same degree, and with the black rear spoiler finishing the look, from a distance, it probably looks like it’s all one interrupted piece.
Inside, the new steering wheel, “stylish trim lines and fresh designs for the seat covers,” attempt to improve the ambiance – the reshaped helm is a definite step in that direction, and a big departure from the sometimes bulky-looking designs found in some older models.
The engine range consists of four petrol engines, and two diesels, which are exactly the same as those available for the regular non-Spaceback - all are economical, but they don’t make the car particularly fast. Still, in having shown the Rapid Sport Concept at this year’s GTI Meeting in Wörthersee, Austria, perhaps a hot model is in the works.

New President, New Car: Czech Republic’s Milos Zeman Is the First to Get the 2014 Skoda Superb

Miloš Zeman, the Czech Republic’s new president since March 2013, is the first to drive (or more likely, be driven in) the recently refreshed Skoda Superb. The Czech carmaker has offered the president a brand new Superb, which is the most luxurious and powerful car produced in the Czech Republic.
Painted in the Black Magic pearl effect hue, the top-of-the-range limousine has the Laurin & Klement trim, which means it is the best-equipped Superb model. It has a brown leather upholstery, piano black trim, heated and ventilated front seats, among other amenities.
The presidential Skoda Superb is powered by a 3.6-liter V6 FSI gasoline engine developing 260 PS (256 hp) and 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) of torque. The engine is mated to a six-speed DSG double-clutch transmission, with power being transmitted to all four wheels.
Since it’s a presidential car, we assume it is armored, hence the need for the most powerful engine. The standard, unarmored, Superb 3.6 FSI V6 is adequately fast, as it accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 6.4 seconds and reaches a top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph).

New Skoda Rapid Spaceback Allegedly Appears on Configurator

Earlier today, we shared the first photos ofSkoda's new Octavia RS performance model that will be offered in Europe with a choice of diesel and gasoline engines, but it's not the only car we're expecting to launch this year from the VW Group's Czech subsidiary.
The estate version of the Rapid compact, rumored to carry the Spaceback or Combi moniker (perhaps even both, depending on the region), is the next new model waiting in line for its premiere, though, if we are to believe the crew over at Autoforum, the station wagon may have had an early reveal on Skoda's official website.
These pictures were reportedly found on the Rapid's configurator. For the record, we did visit Skoda's site but did not find a section for the Spaceback.
On a side note, if they are real, then this means that the photos of a small Skoda estate nabbed last month in Europe could be showing us the new Fabia Combi (unless the company's engineers cunningly applied faux decals on the third side window corners and lights) and not the Rapid Sportback.
Hat tip to Roman S.!

New Skoda Octavia RS Revealed, Offered With 217HP Petrol and 181HP Diesel Engines

The Skoda Octavia RS (dubbed vRS in Britain) has been a very eagerly anticipated car for 2013, and now it’s here, in all its subtle glory. It looks exactly like you would imagine it to, it has the 220 PS (217 hp) we were expecting it to have, and its exterior modifications over the regular Octavia are visible, but they are characteristically subtle, again, like you were expecting.
If you were anticipating it to reach 62 mph or 100 km/h in just under 7 seconds, your guess was spot on, as it does it only two tenths faster than that at 6.8 seconds. Top speed is 155 mph (248 km/h). These figures are for the 2.0-liter petrol engine, while the other (predictable) option, the 2.0-liter diesel with 184 PS (181 hp) is a bit slower, but a lot more economical. It deals with the benchmark sprint in 8.1 seconds, and its top speed is 145 mph or 232 km/h.
However, even those who choose the DSG automatic gearbox (six-speed manual is standard) will only have six gears to play with. This is not necessarily a bad thing for the automatic that will use more of the engines’ torque, instead of shuffling through the gears for the most efficient one and not settling down, as you’d want.
Skoda claims that with the efficient overall construction and improvements in green tech, this third generation hot Octavia is 19 percent more efficient than the outgoing model, which wasn’t a thirsty car to begin with. It also sports improved handling over the previous model and features the XDS electronically simulated limited-slip differential, which is meant to reduce understeer tendency in corners and improve overall agility.
When it comes to exterior mods, there is really nothing to write home about, aside from the rims this first car comes with, which I quite fancy – they are easily the main focal point when looking at the car from its side profile, and one of four all-new designs specially created for the RS. They are available in 17-, 18- and 19-inch sizes to suit as wide a range of buyers as possible.
There’s a new bumper, new headlights and grille, as well as different side skirts, and a rear bumper that neatly houses two large tailpipes, but that’s pretty much all there is – the blue pain finish is also worth mentioning, because like in the case of the Maserati Ghibli, it’s often a nice color like this which turns a car’s appearance around for the better.
Skoda has not released any interior shots, but as with the exterior, don’t expect anything too fancy, in terms of flamboyant design or radical modifications. According to the manufacturer, “the interior of the new ŠKODA Octavia RS is characterized by the sporty, black interior.”  This must mean that they have a black theme going with the passenger compartment, which should be spruced up with touches like special stitching, materials, seats as well as unique steering wheel and gear knob. We also anticipate seeing some subtle RS badging in and around the cabin.
The Octavia RS will be available as both a liftback (which looks like a sedan) and an estate, with the latter being the more expensive of the two. Pricing has not been announced yet, but with the multitude of safety, comfort and entertainment options one will be presented with, few will stick to paying it the basic price and will opt for a higher-spec car.

Skoda Details New Octavia Combi 4x4, Shares

Following the world premiere of the new Octavia Combi at this year’s Geneva Motor ShowSkodahas released information about the 4x4 variants of its station wagon that are now fitted with an updated AWD system featuring the latest-generation Haldex 5 clutch.
Of the 124,500 Skoda Octavia estates sold last year in Europe, almost 20 percent were all-wheel drive versions, with the ratio being even higher in Scandinavian and Alpine countries (61 percent in Norway, 55 percent in Switzerland).
The upgraded all-wheel drive system has an intelligent distribution of torque between both axles and individual wheels. Under normal driving conditions, most of the power will go to the front axle. As soon as more torque is required or the wheels need more grip, the rear wheels are seamlessly activated. The Octavia Combi 4x4 also comes with a standard EDL (Electronic Differential Lock) which acts as a transversal lock allowing for stable starting-off on surfaces with uneven grip.
The Octavia Combi 4x4 is offered with a choice of three engines, one petrol and two diesels. The 180PS (177hp) 1.8 TSI petrol is the most powerful, with the base engine being the 105PS (103hp) 1.6 TDI diesel. There’s also the more powerful 150PS (147hp) 2.0 TDI on offer. All three versions come with start-stop and an energy recuperation system as standard. Skoda says fuel economy and emission figures have been improved by an average of 14 percent over the preceding model.
Combined with a six-speed manual gearbox, the 1.6 TDI averages 4.5 l/100 km (52.2 US mpg) and emits 119 g of CO2/km, while the 2.0 TDI has a combined fuel consumption of 4.9 l/100 km (48 US mpg) and CO2 emissions of 124 g/km.
The gasoline 1.8 TSI, available exclusively with an automatic six-speed DSG dual-clutch transmission, averages 6.7 l/100 km (35.1 US mpg) and emits 156 g of CO2/km. It is, however, the fastest, with 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) taking 7.5 seconds, while topping out at 227 km/h (141 mph).
Sales of the Octavia Combi 4x4 will begin in Europe in June, a month after the launch of the front-wheel drive model.
