Zeiss introduces 'no distortion' Otus 1.4/85mm

Zeiss has announced a new fast mid-telephoto prime to join last year's widely acclaimed 1.4/55 lens in the Otus range. Due out in the middle of this month in Canon EF (ZE) and Nikon F (ZF.2) mounts, the new Zeiss Otus 1.4/85 is a manual focus lens claimed to offer exceptional performance even when used wide open on full frame cameras
Zeiss states that the lens offers 'a neutral bokeh in the background, highly detailed images without any optical artifacts, consistently high resolution power across the entire image field, no color fringing or distortion, and an extremely high image contrast all the way into the edges'.
Aimed at landscape as well as portrait photographers, the lens uses variable air spaces between 'floating elements' to ensure image quality is as good at infinity as it is as the short distances that headshots require. Zeiss says the lens has a minimum focus distance of 0.65 meters, at which the widest apertures are said to still render plenty of detail and aberration-free images.

The Planar-based design uses eleven elements in nine groups and anomalous partial dispersion glass to achieve apochromatic correction. Zeiss emphasises that chromatic aberrations have been dealt with so we shouldn't expect to see them even on high contrast edges either side of the focus plane or around out-of-focus highlights – at any aperture.
'When we launched the Otus 1.4/55, our customers immediately understood the benefits they can get from such a lens: using their high-end full-frame camera, they can shoot pictures with a quality and look they were previously only used to getting from expensive medium-format systems,' explains Christophe Casenave, Product Manager, ZEISS Camera Lenses.
'With the Otus 1.4/85 we are now bringing out the second lens with this promise. Again with the Otus 1.4/85 we can say that this is a lens without any compromise on image quality. Contrast and resolution power are at the maximum level; there are no chromatic aberrations, even in the most challenging light situations; and there's no distortion, ghosting or flare. And all of this at any aperture.'
The Zeiss Otus 1.4/85 will be priced at $4,490/3,360 Euro plus tax.
